The Warhammer Herald delves back into PvE dungeons
Filed under: Fantasy, Endgame, Warhammer Online, PvE
The trusty Herald for Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning has once again delved back into the game’s non-PvP content. Though WAR is built around the massive Realm vs. Realm systems developed by Mythic Entertainment, there are numerous Player vs. Environment options available to gamers who want something a little more traditional. This is actually the third of these guides to roll out to the Warhammer site. The first dealt with low-level treks like the Altdorf sewers and The Sacellum, while the second delved into mid-level dungeons probably very familiar to WAR veterans (Gunbad, Bastion Stair,…

New blogging community forms around Warhammer Online
Filed under: Fantasy, MMO industry, Warhammer Online, News items
When gamers passionate about their MMO of choice form a close-knit community of bloggers, it provides a collective window into the game that readers wouldn’t be able to get from the major sites alone. A prime example of this is the very active EVE Online blogging community brought together by our friend CrazyKinux, where EVE’s players contribute opinions, tips, even tutorials on a daily basis. Given how successful this has been with EVE Online, why can’t MMO gamers rally around another title? It’s possible that the next blogging community focused on a single MMO title will be based around…

One Shots: Fireworks for the fanciers
Filed under: Fantasy, Screenshots, Warhammer Online, One Shots
We’re nearing the end of Warhammer Online’s holiday event, Keg End. As several of my friends would tell me, the end of a keg is a sad occasion, but this particular version has been pretty fun. Besides, you have all the great memories of friends and festivities to carry with you until the next keg comes along. Today’s One Shots comes to us from Urbaine Sunspear of The Rose & The Raven guild on EU Karak Eight Peaks. This is his 27 Swordmaster, enjoying the magnificent fireworks display as part of his Warhammer Online holiday celebration. Lucky for us, he captured this image and sent it in…

The winner of the Mark Jacobs Award for Corporate Community Achievement is…
Filed under: Culture, MMO industry, Opinion, Humor
Yes, you didn’t blink when you read the title. Of course, the award was made by Alex Litel of “Bell, Game, and Candle” at GameSetWatch and it’s meant to be tongue-in-cheek, but it really shows how connected Jacobs is with all of the Warhammer Online hype. Litel’s article showcases the many press release quotes that just make you tilt your head in confusion and wonder why exactly someone wrote that for marketing purposes. Quotes such as Cliffy B calling the original Gears of War “…just a tease, an appetizer to Gears of War characters and new style of gameplay” just to ramp up marketing for…

WAR’s PvE Dungeon Guide part two
Filed under: Fantasy, Game mechanics, Warhammer Online, PvE
Warhammer Online’s dev team is at it again with part two of their three-part guide on the PvE dungeons. This article gives us just a slight overview of four PvE dungeons and what they’re all about, without giving spoilers. These four dungeons are Gunbad Tunnels, Bastion Stair, Warpblade Tunnels, and Bloodwrought Enclave. Each dungeon is broken down into a description of the entrance, a general theme and then some amusingly lore-tastic quotes from what would be the inhabitants of each area. Check out this dungeon guide, the previous part one and look forward to the final installment coming…

News flash: MMOs rule
Filed under: World of Warcraft, Fantasy, MMO industry, Warhammer Online, Opinion

Rumors of the impending death of PC gaming have been greatly exaggerated, at least if you take the word of Christopher T. Fong, who writes the Playing Games column at SFGate (San Francisco Chronicle). Fong’s latest piece “Year in review: MMOs rule. PC gaming lives.” is a very brief look at the state of play on the PC, notably the MMOs and expansions that arrived on the scene in 2008.
Not surprisingly, Fong focuses on the W’s — Warhammer Online and World of Warcraft — with a few boxing references worked in. While we all know that, in terms of subscribers, World of Warcraft is the reigning champ, it’s clear that Warhammer Online won’t be throwing in the towel anytime soon. (See what I did there?) In this writer’s opinion, each offers something the other does not. The clash between players of each respective title might not ever be fully resolved, but as Fong also states — they’re both solid titles in their own right. That being said, please feel free to boldly proclaim which game is better and why.

One Shots: Festive Keg End fireworks
Filed under: Fantasy, Screenshots, Warhammer Online, One Shots
Some folks don’t go in for all that Christmas stuff, and prefer instead to utilize explosives and ale. (Kind of like that American 4th of July thing, but with colder weather.) Today’s Warhammer Online One Shots is from just one such reveler, Thalired. Apparently this brave adventurer not only decided to have a drink as part of the Keg End celebration, but then wandered into the Shadowlands and set off this great big starburst firework. If the mobs nearby didn’t know there was someone to munch on before, they do now! But hey, that seems like it would make for a very exciting holiday, no? If…

SWTOR might be EA’s best chance at improving profitability
Filed under: Sci-fi, Business models, Economy, MMO industry, Star Wars: The Old Republic
In a recent article on Gamasutra, Cowen Group analyst Doug Creutz discussed EA’s disappointing performance of late, blaming the software giant’s “inability to develop hit core-gamer console titles”. This has led to him significantly lowering his estimates for their 2009 earnings. The analyst’s reportings are fairly doom-and-gloom, but he did mention A New Hope for the company: Star Wars: The Old Republic. EA acquired BioWare, the developers of SWTOR, back in October last year. Creutz is of the belief that EA has really messed up their console campaign this generation, and SWTOR could be the…

One Shots: Traffic jam!
Filed under: Fantasy, Screenshots, Warhammer Online, One Shots
We’d heard about some graphical glitches occurring in Warhammer Online, but this one kind of takes the cake in terms of what we’ve seen so far. (After all, what’s the competition by and large - naked Dwarves?) Today’s glitchy One Shots comes to us from Bossmoney Playahprez, who simply notes himself as Lvl 40 ironbreaker. Bossmoney writes: Because of a graphic bug in Warhammer Online, sometimes a mount will still remain after the rider has already left it. When there’s a few hundred players trying to enter an enemy fortress at one time, that can leave behind A lot of mounts. Having never seen…

Get your friends and go to WAR: Mythic offers recruit-a-friend program
Filed under: Fantasy, Business models, Warhammer Online, News items
When Christmas comes and you want to find the very best present, let your friends and family go to WAR with you! Warhammer Online has just thrown open the gates to its own recruit-a-friend program, letting current subscribers send out free 14 day trials to anyone they wish. If your buddy converts his trial account to a full account by buying the game, then you get the standard 30 days free. Mythic’s…
