Know Your LotRO Lore: The Elves
Filed under: Fantasy, Lord of the Rings Online, Lore, Education, Know Your LotRO Lore
Welcome to Know Your LotRO Lore, a new weekly column here at Massively showcasing the lore of J.R.R. Tolkien’s world as it intersects with Turbine’s Lord of the Rings Online. The Elf is possibly the most intricately-detailed race in all of J.R.R. Tolkien’s works. He created their histories, bloodlines and origins throughout his entire life, from before The Hobbit to works published after his death. Did Tolkien invent Elves? No, but he did redefine them as they’re portrayed today in modern fantasy settings. Mostly everything we see in WoW, Warhammer, and of course LotRO come from Tolkien’s…

One Shots: Quiet homage
Filed under: Fantasy, Screenshots, Lord of the Rings Online, One Shots
We love Lord of the Rings Online. Graphically, you just can’t deny that the world of Middle-earth is absolutely gorgeous. No exception to this is today’s One Shots submission sent in to us from our regular Lord of the Rings Online contributor, Finudir. He tells us a bit about this scene: Captains must always look to the past to find examples of great leaders before them. In one such exercise Finudir was tasked with saving a statue of Elendil, perhaps the greatest leader to ever grace Middle-Earth. Here is Captain Finudir of Gondor paying homage before the reconstituted statue. Do you have a…

Turbine’s RMT Manager position not for any current games
Filed under: Fantasy, Dungeons and Dragons Online, Lord of the Rings Online, Business models, Forums, MMO industry
With RMT being the hottest topic of 2009 MMO gaming news so far, we recently ran a post about Turbine’s job listing for a Microtransaction Manager. This news was not met with many open arms, as the most vocal RMT detractors spoke up against the speculation that this position could be for one of their favorite Turbine MMOs.
Well fret no more, oh saviors of the subscription plan. In a recent post on LotRO’s official forums, Turbine’s Sapience clears up the confusion and speculation: “We know the recent job listing has caused a bit of a stir, but please be aware that this posting is for an unannounced future project. We appreciate the thoughts and feedback on both sides thus far.”
[Thanks Tony!]

SSL certificate expiration complicates LotRO logins
Filed under: Fantasy, Lord of the Rings Online, Bugs
Massively writers trying to play Lord of the Rings Online this Saturday morning stumbled into a mess that’s apparently been going on most of the day; upon trying to log into the game, the following error appears: “The SSL certificate appears to be expired. Please ensure your system clock is set to the correct time and try again. [ERROR 80001]“ Investigating the LotRO forums has uncovered an official thread from CM Tarrant resassuring players that Turbine’s NetOps team is looking into it.
Meanwhile, players have already solved the issue. If you want to get into the game, just set your computer’s clock back to January 1st. The complication there is that daily quests might then be tweaked out, and so further recommendations state you should set your computer’s date and time to the correct values at the character select screen. Essentially, set the clock back to log in, and then reset once you’re past the loader. Turbine assures this issue will be resolved soon, and we can’t imagine this seemingly minor error will continue much longer.
Update: And resolved it was, at around 2pm ET. Sapience wants everyone to be sure to set their computers for the correct time if you used that as a cheap workaround. That should ensure the SSL error doesn’t show up for you.

Turbine hiring for Microtransaction Manager
Filed under: Asheron’s Call, Dungeons and Dragons Online, Lord of the Rings Online, Business models, Economy, MMO industry, News items
We’ve seen a steady growth in the arena of microtransactions over the last several years, with more and more Western companies noticing the lucrative practices Eastern MMO companies have; offering item malls to their players. After all, you really can’t ignore the growth of companies like Nexon who are raking in more and more money each year with their free-to-play microtransaction model games. Recently, we’ve seen Sony Online Entertainment testing the waters in EverQuest and EverQuest II by including a small number of items available for players in their pilot in-game item malls, with promises to add more in the future.
Now, it appears that we’re starting 2009 with another Western company heading in the direction of adding microtransactions to their in-game landscape. Turbine, despite recent job cuts, has added several job postings in other departments. The one that caught our eye, however, was a recent posting for a “microtransaction/e-commerce manager” who will be in charge of “delivering and maximizing the revenue derived from Turbine’s micro-transaction-based in-game store.” They’ve kicked around the idea of adding microtransactions in interviews before, but this posting seems to support a definitive move in that direction.

Detailed LotRO maps document a year of new content
Filed under: Fantasy, Lord of the Rings Online, Maps, Academic, Education
2008 has been a great year for Lord of the Rings Online. Not only for the exploding playerbase, but also for the amazing amount of content that has been added to the game since it launched. This includes everything from new classes, housing, hobbies, trophies, weapons, armor, and of course, new areas to explore.
As a testament to this, the wonderful fan site Visions of the Ring has compiled a “before” and “after” set of maps showing the areas we had available a year ago versus the areas we have to explore now. You’ll notice the addition of Forochel, Eregion, the Mines, Lothlorien and more. These maps are taken and compiled from the overhead radar map, so the detail is all there. While you’re at the site, be sure to check out the Interactive Horse Routes Flash Map, the Homesteads Flash Maps and the Speculated Expansions Flash Map, which is said to be updated for the new year’s expanded areas very soon.
