EverQuest cleaning house with server merges and character changes
Filed under: Fantasy, EverQuest, Game mechanics, Guilds, Server downtime, News items
Sony Online Entertainment has sent out a customer service notification to EverQuest players, dealing with some changes that will potentially affect your account(s). Perhaps the biggest news is an impending server merge — “The Combine” and “Druzzil Ro (Xev)” servers will merge on January 21 at 3 a.m. PST, a process which is expected to last roughly five hours. The new server will retain the name “Druzzil Ro.” While server merges tend to be portents of doom and gloom by some players, EverQuest will also add a new server in March. Players will be able to vote on which type of server it will be…

Putting on appearances in Star Wars Galaxies
Filed under: Sci-fi, Patches, Star Wars Galaxies
Later this year a brand new ‘appearance’ system will be added to SOE’s Star Wars Galaxies MMO. Like similar systems found in Lord of the Rings Online and EverQuest II it will allow players to appear to be be wearing whatever they wish, while gaining the mechanical benefits of specific ‘loot’ pieces. In a way the system reintroduces one much beloved portion of pre-NGE SWG, which often saw players wearing varied outfits. Loot, in those days, didn’t have mechanical benefits. To accompany the new system, the official site has up a Friday feature explaining how the system is to be used. Making…

Pirates of the Burning Sea launches their avatar combat redesign
Filed under: Fantasy, Historical, Pirates of the Burning Sea, Game mechanics, Patches
Avatar combat was always the stepchild system in Pirates of the Burning Sea. Where ship combat was polished, intense, and very different from your standard MMO combat fare, avatar combat just seemed plain weak and added in at the last moment. In fact, it was one of the last things added to the game, as lead designer Kevin “Isildur” Maginn tells us in his developer blog. But as of today, with the new “Clash of Steel” patch, avatar combat has gotten a complete redesign. Thar’ be a major update, mateys! Kevin has been working on the avatar combat system for months now under the radar, telling us…

DC Universe Online’s revenue model and development discussed
Filed under: Business models, New titles, News items, DC Universe Online
DC Universe Online’s senior producer Wes Yanagi recently spoke with Gamasutra about a ton of things related to the supermen title, but the big question asked was related to RMT. While he couldn’t say whether or not the game would be based on a subscription or microtransactional model, Yanagi did say he thought microtransaction models had huge potential. To illustrate his point Yanagi brought up Free Realms, saying that SOE will probably see a financial success there. This echoes many opinions convinced that SOE is testing the waters with Free Realms in order to see what does and doesn’t work…

The Digital Continuum: Five MMOs to watch out for in 2009
Filed under: MMO industry, Opinion, The Digital Continuum
Out of all the games coming out or possibly being announced in the coming year, which are the ones everyone should train their eye on? What games — or announcements — should be watched more closely than others, and why? These are the questions that I’ll do my best to answer in this week’s The Digital Continuum. Of course, I’ll also probably say some crazy things that may or may not come true, as per my usual agenda. So it’s a win-win for everyone involved!…

EverQuest II Game Update 52 preview includes revamp of Lavastorm
Filed under: Fantasy, EverQuest II, Patches
Brett Scheinert, game designer on the SOE flagship product EverQuest II, has dropped into the official forums with a sort of ‘New Year’s Resolution’. In point of fact, it’s a preview of new content coming to the game in Game Update 52! Posting with his forum name of timetraveling, Scheinert promised we’d see the following within the next few months:
- A new instance with 9 bosses geared for two groups at a time. Over half of the bosses will be slated to drop Void Shards, the new metacurrency introduced with the Shadow Odyssey expansion. This will be endgame content balanced for characters with only the very best gear.
- On top of that, players will also see a similar raid balanced for four groups at once.
- Tradeskillers will be seeing another trades instance, this time based in the epic dungeon ‘The Void’.
- The classic zone Lavastorm will be seeing numerous improvements, similar to changes made to Everfrost in GU 48.
- Among these changes, players will see brand new areas with level 80 solo content tied into an all-new Lavastorm-based faction.
- This faction will offer numerous pieces of gear to earn, including 12 new armor sets with brand-new appearances. timetraveling makes a point to note that one of these armor sets is going to be a brand-new robe model with helm, shoulders, and legs as seperate visible pieces from the chest-part!
Coming hard on the heels of an entire new expansion with multiple new dungeons, it’s interesting to see the tack the EQ2 designers are taking with this. All new endgame content to explore, with new loot/appearance rewards tying into their revamp of older content. It’s a great continuation of strides they took forward in 2008, and makes it sound like 2009 will be a great year to be an EverQuest II gamer. Stay tuned to Massively after the holidays for details on this new content!

Star Wars Galaxies TCG expansion Squadrons Over Corellia live
Filed under: Sci-fi, Expansions, Star Wars Galaxies, Trading card games
Early last week Star Wars Galaxies players and TCG fans received a holiday treat: the launch of the first expansion for Champions of the Force, the in-game card game for SOE’s Star Wars MMO. The expansion is entitled Squadrons Over Corellia, and was just announced late in November. The new card set has added a number of novel game elements to the card-based title, not least of which is new cards featuring Han Solo and the Emperor. New design elements include starship battle components, additional avatar races, new loot, and much more. The card game has also been revamped card event scenarios…
