Hilmar V. Pétursson, CEO of CCP Games, has given a rather softspoken video interview with Gamereactor on where the sci-fi title EVE Online is today, and what’s on the horizon. The interview seems intended for those who haven’t played the game before — as Hilmar gives an intro to the game and its single world setting — or perhaps gamers who haven’t gotten their feet wet in a massively multiplayer online game yet, as he highlights some of the benefits of incorporating more social aspects into video games. Hilmar gives some history of the company, discussing how CCP Games has grown into…

EVE Online player breaks 100 million skillpoints

One of the oldest characters in EVE Online, NTRabbit, made a fairly rare appearance on the game’s official forums, reflecting back on the experience of having racked up over 100 million skillpoints. In EVE, hitting nine digits in skills imparts some serious bragging rights. In fact, those skills plus his years of experience lead NTRabbit to proclaim, “I am close to, if not the, premier combat character in the game.” He sheds some light on the path he’s taken through New Eden, and in the process tells us what the game used to be like in the early days. For most of us newer players, it’s an…

EVE Online sets new record with over 45,000 players logged in

The new year has already brought with it a new milestone for EVE Online, which has now broken all previous records for players active at a given time in its setting of New Eden — over 45,000. This is a substantial achievement for a game where the setting is one single server, representing a vast galaxy of over 5000 solar systems to explore or control. CCP Manifest writes: “What a great way to start out 2009 — a new PCU (Peak Concurrent User) record of 45,186! While we’ve made tremendous serverside changes in the EVE Online infrastructure with the EVE64 and StacklessIO initiatives, it is…

EVE Evolved: The art of tanking - Armour tanking

Back in 2005, I became obsessed with the art of tanking in EVE Online. Before writing the definitive tanking guide for EON issue 2 (for which the EVE community dubbed me “the tanking guy”), I spent a lot of time working out the mathematics behind the art. At a time when people preferred a trial and error approach to combat, I went as far as to create a spreadsheet to automate calculations on the strength of your tank. Over the years, more advanced tools like EFT (EVE Fitting Tool) have been released which have this functionality and more. In this short series of articles, I aim to cover…

EVE Online’s player-run sites need your help

The sci-fi game EVE Online is a title that many players clearly feel passionate about. So much so that 2008 saw a record number of player blogs focused on the game. But beyond the blogging community, there are three standout websites that feature the writing of EVE’s players, and pay their writers for those contributions with EVE’s virtual currency, Inter Stellar Kredits (ISK):

EVE Tribune offers no-holds barred commentary on the game and the player culture surrounding it, with notable coverage of EVE’s politics and alliance struggles. EVE Tribune is also the home of Silicon Buddha’s Fly…

GamerDNA and Massively look back at the MMO year in review Today’s column features data from July through December. GamerDNA being a startup, our data collection in the first half of the year was not consistent enough to use for anything but wild guessing and drinking games. Listen, a start up tech company can make ANYTHING into a drinking game.

Anti-Aliased: Top 5 things MMOs should learn in the new year I am absolutely no more inventive than every other blog in existence, this edition of Anti-Aliased is dedicated to the top 5 things the industry…

One Shots: A snowball’s chance in… space?

*Foom*… *Poff!* The missile-launched snowballs have been flying fast and furious in New Eden. And hey, why not? After the holidays in EVE Online, all of the snowballs will melt anyway, so best to blow out all of that frosty ammo while you can! Today’s EVE Online One Shots sent in to us by Farrellus shows off a snowball fight in progress where a great big Orca has just been pelted with snowballs and is floating amongst the flurries. Thankfully the ammo wasn’t anything serious, considering what Orcas cost. If you’ve got a screenshot of a huge snowball battle - or any other type, for that…

EVE Online’s snowball fights to end January 6th

While implementing “future Christmas in space” wasn’t the most feasible option in EVE Online, CCP Games did revive their holiday tradition of giving players snowball launchers, with harmless snowball ammo. The snowball launchers sound and function like standard missile launchers, and upon impact the snowballs burst into a cloud of snowflakes. However it seems the cat’s out of the bag in terms of baiting surprised targets into returning (live) fire in high security space, and having them put down by CONCORD — EVE’s NPC police. Perhaps it’s just as well though. Soon those unused snowballs…

New blogging community forms around Warhammer Online

When gamers passionate about their MMO of choice form a close-knit community of bloggers, it provides a collective window into the game that readers wouldn’t be able to get from the major sites alone. A prime example of this is the very active EVE Online blogging community brought together by our friend CrazyKinux, where EVE’s players contribute opinions, tips, even tutorials on a daily basis. Given how successful this has been with EVE Online, why can’t MMO gamers rally around another title? It’s possible that the next blogging community focused on a single MMO title will be based around…

CCP Games aims to extend EVE Online to iPhone and mobile phones

Nathan ‘Oveur’ Richardsson, Executive Producer for CCP Games, gave a ’state of the game’ address last month about EVE Online, and hinted at some of the ways he’d like to see EVE evolve. Namely, how the game might expand by leveraging the EVE API. It looks like CCP is taking the next step in making this happen, from the announcement an EVE player came across — one that suggests mobile and iPhone applications for EVE Online may be coming. Reykjavik University and MIT maintain cooperation through the MIT Industrial Liaison Program (ILP), which is essentially a way to tap the expertise of the…
