One Shots: Fireworks for the fanciers
Filed under: Fantasy, Screenshots, Warhammer Online, One Shots
We’re nearing the end of Warhammer Online’s holiday event, Keg End. As several of my friends would tell me, the end of a keg is a sad occasion, but this particular version has been pretty fun. Besides, you have all the great memories of friends and festivities to carry with you until the next keg comes along. Today’s One Shots comes to us from Urbaine Sunspear of The Rose & The Raven guild on EU Karak Eight Peaks. This is his 27 Swordmaster, enjoying the magnificent fireworks display as part of his Warhammer Online holiday celebration. Lucky for us, he captured this image and sent it in…

One Shots: Festive Keg End fireworks
Filed under: Fantasy, Screenshots, Warhammer Online, One Shots
Some folks don’t go in for all that Christmas stuff, and prefer instead to utilize explosives and ale. (Kind of like that American 4th of July thing, but with colder weather.) Today’s Warhammer Online One Shots is from just one such reveler, Thalired. Apparently this brave adventurer not only decided to have a drink as part of the Keg End celebration, but then wandered into the Shadowlands and set off this great big starburst firework. If the mobs nearby didn’t know there was someone to munch on before, they do now! But hey, that seems like it would make for a very exciting holiday, no? If…

SWTOR might be EA’s best chance at improving profitability
Filed under: Sci-fi, Business models, Economy, MMO industry, Star Wars: The Old Republic
In a recent article on Gamasutra, Cowen Group analyst Doug Creutz discussed EA’s disappointing performance of late, blaming the software giant’s “inability to develop hit core-gamer console titles”. This has led to him significantly lowering his estimates for their 2009 earnings. The analyst’s reportings are fairly doom-and-gloom, but he did mention A New Hope for the company: Star Wars: The Old Republic. EA acquired BioWare, the developers of SWTOR, back in October last year. Creutz is of the belief that EA has really messed up their console campaign this generation, and SWTOR could be the…

One Shots: Traffic jam!
Filed under: Fantasy, Screenshots, Warhammer Online, One Shots
We’d heard about some graphical glitches occurring in Warhammer Online, but this one kind of takes the cake in terms of what we’ve seen so far. (After all, what’s the competition by and large - naked Dwarves?) Today’s glitchy One Shots comes to us from Bossmoney Playahprez, who simply notes himself as Lvl 40 ironbreaker. Bossmoney writes: Because of a graphic bug in Warhammer Online, sometimes a mount will still remain after the rider has already left it. When there’s a few hundred players trying to enter an enemy fortress at one time, that can leave behind A lot of mounts. Having never seen…

MMOGology: What will microtransactions mean for SWTOR?
Filed under: New titles, Opinion, Free-to-play, MMOGology, Star Wars: The Old Republic
Who’s afraid of the big, bad microtransaction? Me. Count me with the skeptics when it comes to a microtransaction-based business model for Star Wars: The Old Republic. In case you missed the flurry of news surrounding the announcement, Shacknews reported that Star Wars: The Old Republic would use a microtransaction payment model in place of or in addition to a subscription model. After the article’s release EA issued a brief response that, “no [official] statements have been made about the Star Wars business model.” It’s a story that’s been covered and critiqued several times already on…

Spore Coming to Steam?
It’s no secret that EA has been upset with the number of people who illegally downloaded Spore. Still, they’re determined to make the game into Will Wright’s next Mega Franchise, and they’re so set on doing so that they may release Spore on Valve’s Steam. While there’s been no official announcement (or response to emails) yet, a newly discovered EULA for Spore on Steam’s website gives quite a bit of credence to the rumor.
EA releasing their published games on Steam isn’t new; Crysis and Crysis Warhead are both available on it. But Spore would mark the first time one of EA’s in-house games was released on a download service other than EA’s own EA Store client. Unfortunately, if other SecuROM releases on Steam are any indication, that aspect of it won’t be removed from Spore even if it is losing the disc.
Will EA releasing the game on Steam cause some of you anti-Spore folks to give the game a shot, or is it too little, too late?

WAR Grab Bag No. 6: oRvR, Easy PQs, and dungeons
Filed under: Fantasy, Game mechanics, PvP, Grouping, Warhammer Online, PvE
The latest edition of Warhammer Online’s Grab Bag feature is up, and as well as a question-and-answer segment, we are treated to the first part of a feature on PvE dungeons, written by content developer Gary Astelford. A couple of the questions are directed at Open RvR; we’re told to keep an eye out for some changes that will “make zone control more intuitive and rewarding” in the future. The new Easy PQ system is also asked about, and we learn that although the influence bonus for getting to the next stage of a PQ will be less (past Stage 2), all other influence gains are the same as a normal…

Celebrate the holidays with Warhammer Online’s Keg End live event
Filed under: Fantasy, Events, in-game, Warhammer Online, News items
Beer, boasting and things that go boom make up the Warhammer Online holiday event this year. Starting next week on Wednesday, December 17th and running through to January 5th. The event is going to be full of everything a Dwarf holds dear, which includes plenty of booze. Players will be able to set of fireworks whenever they like, including when charging into battle, or they can search for the legendary golden Golden Stein and earn the blessing of Grimnir himself. Whatever a player does or doesn’t do, everyone will be making use of the new emotes — well, at least we certainly will. Simply…

Speculating on combat in Star Wars: The Old Republic
Filed under: Sci-fi, New titles, Opinion, Star Wars: The Old Republic
Even though Star Wars: The Old Republic is now officially a real game, we still know very little about it aside from slivers of information BioWare has been able to share with us. What we know even less about is the combat system, which has simply been described as “choreographed” much like the battles featured in the Star Wars films. Thankfully, this little nugget of information gives us a springboard into what combat in the online Old Republic could be like, and while it’s not much, it’s definitely a start….
