Looming History
Many believed this day would never come. Most of us hoped and prayed that it would, but few of us actually believed we would live to see it. Racism is an ugly thing in all of its forms, and there is little doubt that if this man had moved into this house fifteen years ago, there would have been a great outcry - possibly even rioting in the streets. Today, we can all be both grateful and proud that no such mayhem will take place when this man takes up residency in this house.
This man moving into this house at this time in our nation’s history is much more than a simple change of addresses for him - it is proof of a change in our attitude as a nation. It is an amends of sorts - the righting of a great wrong. It is a symbol of our growth, and of our willingness to "judge a man, not by the color of his skin, but by the content of his character". There can be little doubt now that the vast majority of us truly believe that this man has earned both his place in history and his new address.
His time in this house will not be easy - it will be fraught with danger and he will face many challenges. I am sure there will be many times when he asks himself how in the world he ended up here and, like all who have gone before him, the experience will age him greatly.
But I, for one, will not waste an ounce of worry for his sake - because in every way a man can, he asked for this. His whole life for the past fifteen years appears to have been inexorably leading this man toward this house. It is highly probable that in the past, despite all of his actions, racism would have kept this man out of this house. Today, I thank the lord above that I am an American and that I live in a nation where wrongs are righted, where justice matters, and where truly anything is possible.

Kinship Search
I am pretty particular about my kins and find them to be an extremely important factor in my gaming experience. I always feel rather than pick a kin that doesn’t fit me I would rather solo. I do enjoy soloing and that typically is my playstyle but I still like the kinship chat and assisting and being assisted by kinship members.
I have been playing for about a year and I was part of the beta. I have a lifetime sub and I absolutely love Tolkien (read most all of his books) and LOTR. I have one high level and the rest of my slots are filled with alts. I have altitis. They are telling me its not so serious and can be controlled by medicine but I usually forget to take it.
I have all crafts covered (for the sole purpose of arming myself and helping my friends) and I have tried all classes in the game out. I have been playing MMOs since UO and have played most out there. I have been part of and even GMd many guilds in my time.
My ideal Kinship is a very casual , mature, and laid back kinship. One that doesn’t really police their chat and if the occasional curse word or sexual inuendo slips they are not crucified for it. I am not talking F this F that and F you every other word or porn quality chat but chat that is very loose but respectful of your fellow members.
A kin that enjoys end game content and works together to do it but is not all about raiding or PvMP or anything for that matter. A group that is addicted to alts as much as me (well maybe not that addicted) and a kin that wont think twice to go help a fellow kinmate out with a quest. Especially the crafting quests I have several low level alts that can’t finish their crafting off because they can’t complete their quests and have talked to man that have the same problem.
I played DAoC for years and long after I was bored with my first realm and eventually the game I kept returning to my first server and characters because of my guild that I helped build and co-GMd. They were a great bunch of people and I enjoyed hanging out with them in game. They were the type of people that I would have happily hung out with in RL and did with several of them. I want that again
Does this kin exist? If not are there others who would like to join me in hopes of creating this kin? I know it would be hard but I can’t believe that my guild in DAoC was the only one that I would ever have the pleasure of being a part of.
Maybe I am just ranting but I would really like to find a kinship "family" again. Thanks for listening… I’ll take my whine session somewhere else now…. lol

Turbine’s RMT Manager position not for any current games
Filed under: Fantasy, Dungeons and Dragons Online, Lord of the Rings Online, Business models, Forums, MMO industry
With RMT being the hottest topic of 2009 MMO gaming news so far, we recently ran a post about Turbine’s job listing for a Microtransaction Manager. This news was not met with many open arms, as the most vocal RMT detractors spoke up against the speculation that this position could be for one of their favorite Turbine MMOs.
Well fret no more, oh saviors of the subscription plan. In a recent post on LotRO’s official forums, Turbine’s Sapience clears up the confusion and speculation: “We know the recent job listing has caused a bit of a stir, but please be aware that this posting is for an unannounced future project. We appreciate the thoughts and feedback on both sides thus far.”
[Thanks Tony!]

Rose Gardens
Pena had never been to the gardens before, so she decided on a day such as this she should explore. She found that she had ventured into the Rose Gardens, Pena’s hazel eyes lit up and a big smile crossed her face. Roses were her absolute favorite flower especially red roses. She took in a deep breath and took in the overwhelming aroma that the roses had to offer. As she walked under the beautiful Ivy covered archway she saw roses of many different colors orange, red, yellow and even white. How absolutely breath taking Pena thought as she walked among the roses. After wondering among the roses for what seemed like hours Pena finally decided to sit down upon one of the many benches.
Pena’s thoughts began to wonder to her brother whom she worried about constantly. Eurant traveled middle earth with the rangers and did not come home very often. He always had interesting stories to tell her about his travels, but she always worried that one day he would not return. Anytime her thoughts wondered to that particular thought she tried to think of happier things. Eurant told her not worry, but she did anyway. He always brought her a book when he came to visit, it was his way of making up for being gone. He told her that he loved the look on her face as she looked through the book. Pena sighed why must he be gone so much?
Pena sensed someone approaching she looked up to see Caunion who had been her best friend for as long as she could remember. She smiled at him, but she could never pull a wall over his eyes. With a concerned look he asked ” What troubles you my friend?” Pena sighed again ” Eurant left again and I miss him.Caunion gave her a small smile ” You know you worry too much.” Pena paused for a moment “Wait a minute how did you know where to find me?” Caunion laughed ” I have known you for a very long time and I know you better then you know yourself. Pena smiled ” Good point” Caunion’s chocolate brown eyes lit up with mirth, ” I’m glad you have seen your mistake. “Pena punched him in the shoulder playfully ” What would I do without you?” Caunion laughed again ” You would more then likely die of melancholy” Pena try to punch him again, but missed. Caunion laughed once more ” I was just kidding, you know you love me” Pena shot him a bemused look ” Sometimes I wonder why” Caunion rose and helped her up from the bench and they left the Rose Gardens together.
Isengard : The Penguin Pub

Tenharien found himself in a place that he thought me might not see for many years. He had a good reason to be, otherwise he would never have come. He had made a long trip to a place he did not like, and he did it alone. He did not always have anger and frustration towards Isengard however. There was once a trip planned for friends. The trip was pleasant. The ellon had always wanted to go to Isengard, but once he got there, his dreams were crushed. Everything he had thought well of the place was complete opposite and there was but one there who he might actually call a friend to this day. He was sure he would see this person upon his arrival, but it was yet to be seen if this “friend,” would know him the same. He did nto bring much, he hoped to be in and out of this dreadful backwards place and he hoped he would not have to say much while there.
He came simply to protect someone. He did not know how this person felt about this place, Isengard, but he knew what he knew and he wanted to see to it that this person knew how he felt, and should definately take his council on the matter. He walked on quietly not saying much to those who passed him. He kept his grey hood over head. He was dressed in his gondorian clothes as if he had come straight from battle, or from his duties as Corporal in the Muinamacar. He had his sword, his knife, though his bow was stored away with his horse, Adalas whom it seemed was not happy to be in this place either. But the horse coped, and so did Tenharien, his leather tight on his body and his clothes free. His raven hair pushed to one side and his tall frame upright. He leaned over to a man, smirking and then cracked his neck slowly, tired from the ride. “Where is the pub around here?” he aksed. “Which pub sir?” “Sir?” Surprised by the short man’s polite attitude, the elf smirked again and then looked off to the distance. “All of them, I shall choose for myself if you please.” After a short conversation Ten was off. He had come to his first choice and sighed, looking at the door and then pushed his way on inside.
To his surprise he saw familiar faces. A few actually. He was ure these faces would vaguely remember him but it did not bother him. He could not forget many faces. Though he was unsure if they would remember him or even if he would speak to them yet, or at all. He walked slowly, still looking around and not remember the dark horrible place of his past. It seemed different. “I…” He said as he looked at Mac, the only one from this place he would ever call friend, and then looked away quickly, hoping he had not heard, and still nto ready to speak, afraid to be forgotten and remembered all at once. Then he spotted her, the elleth he had come to speak to. He shifted his blade to his side, making his walk comfortable and passed Nightshade, another familiar face, but not a friend to him, nor him to her. There was another female sitting with the elleth, he wished to speak to. He cracked a smile at Mazana and then looked his mother in the eye as he approached. “Mother, why are you here?”

Amruniel EressËa
Roquen Page
Trainer: Roquen Captain Rochir Mumakdacil
Post 2 of 2
Amruniel was up bright and early again. Although this time, it was not such a sad morning. Since her last training session, the elleth had found hope. And she found among the Roquen remounts two geldings she absolutely adored, Nurroch, a Nurnen bay gelding, and LÆdron, a Celebranton bay gelding. She still favored Nurroch, but LÆdron was more suited to her needs and body structure.
She had gotten out of bed well before sunrise again, and promptly got ready for the day. She had received word from Captain Rochir that she was to bring her weapons. She figured that he wanted to train her with fighting on horseback. How he would accomplish that, she was not quite sure. And honestly, here mind was racing. She had fought on horseback before, but that mainly was against a single enemy and she had just thrown a dagger. It made her opponent lose his balance and he fell off the horse. From that point, fighting was rather easy.
While she thought, she changed out of her nightshift and into “riding clothes.” First she put on brown trousers, so as to hide and dirt she may acumulate. On her feet she placed black boots, and like always, stuck her trusty daggers in them. The one she inherited from Tzulien went into her right, and her own went into her left. Making sure that everything in her boots were secure, she tightened them (for they tied down the side.) She then put on a dark cream colored shirt, and a brown cloak rested around her neck. At her side, she sheathed her sword, handcrafted by her friend who had recently passed from the world. She then disappeared into the kitchen, and ate some breakfast potatŒs, sausage and eggs. She firmly believed that a Ranger needed a good breakfast to start the day, for one never knew what may happen that a Ranger may have to do. They were not only the army, so to speak, but peacekeepers, they were the King’s eyes. She knew this, and thus swore that she would never shirk in her duties, which included eating breakfast.
Just as she finished, Samuel came in from tending to his duties. “I see you are ready for the day early. AND I didn’t have to drag you away from AinadÆ’s stall this morning! I am quite impressed Mother Runi. And I see you have eaten. Very good.”
Samuel looked his mother up and down and then ran out of the room. Amruniel’s eyebrows raised, for this was strange behavior for Samuel. But before she could contemplate too hard, Samuel had returned. “I’m willing to bet you forgot a few things. Like her are you keys.” He tossed them to Runi and she put them in her right boot. “Now don’t lose those, those are the ones to both the house and the shop. Also the apartment key is there too. In case you want to check on all that after your training.” He then tossed Runi a little sack. “Some treats and helps during training.”
“Samuel, melda, I don’t exactly have room for the entire house. And it will only be a few hours anyway.” He smiled and only said, “You never know.” He then started pushing her out the door, but before Runi could leave he stopped her. “WAIT! Your bow! You need that!” Amruniel rolled her eyes. That was something she wished she hadn’t taught him so well. He always made her be over prepared. Sometimes, it made her wonder if she was moving, or if she was going to training. But, she didn’t mind. She’d rather be over prepared than under prepared.
Soon Samuel was back and adjusting her quiver (a foresty green with elvish designs) on her back and her handmade bow, also with elven emblems on it. She smiled and opened the door. “Thank you Samuel, have a good day. And don’t forget to talk to Luinor about that room.” She then kissed Samuel on the forehead goodbye, and left.
“You know, I should probably retrieve LÆdron. That might be useful. The Captain did say to come on horseback.” She chuckled and made her way for the stables, quite quickly, even though she had allowed plenty of time. She just was really anxious to get started. And she also couldn’t wait to have a horse under her again. Before long, she had reached the stables, and headed straight for LÆdron’s stall. “Aiya nilmo.” LÆdron stuck his head out over the door, and Runi rubbed it fondly. “Shall we get going, melda?” The gelding seemed to agree, and Runi, sensing his energy and restlessness, hurried and tacked up her little friend. “All right, let’s go train!”
Runi led the horse out of the stables, and before getting on, let the horse walk around a bit. Runi firmly believed in horses needing to stretch before a day of hard work. She smiled, quite pleased with the beautiful horse. And LÆdron was quite happy to be out of the stall too. After a little while of stretching legs, Runi made sure everything was tacked up properly, (always good to do a double check) and then put her right foot in the stirrup, pulled herself up and swung her left leg over the other side of the saddle. “All right LÆdron, lets head over to the training grounds!” Almost instantly, the horse and rider were moving. Both were ready for the day ahead. And both were excited. Runi smiled to herself, and LÆdron trotted swiftly to the grounds.
When they got there, Runi slowed him down to a walk, and walked him around the grounds once, before stopping at Rochir. Runi listened intently to orders, LÆdron as well. Runi took note of all the targets and cabbages where Rochir pointed, and then made sure that all of her weapons were still in place. Pat boots. Daggers, check. Left side, sword. Check. Quiver back. Check. Shortbow, check! She was ready to go. She then repeated to herself Rochir’s words in her head. She chuckled as Rochir mention cabbages being Easterlings heads. Having lived in Mordor, she knew more Easterlings than she ever needed to know. And then moving here, it instilled more hatred of them. She wanted to protect these lands, and she knew that Easterlings were not just her enemies, but all their enemies. She had practiced quite a lot at home chopping off Easterling heads. After all, she did have to practice using her sword, since she was of the Hyandaner, right? Well for a while at any rate. Now technically she was a Roquen. But at heart, she was both. She smiled.
Then a thought entered her mind. For some reason, the cabbages reminded her of an incident not to long ago. At the memory she frowned. Sheer stupidity is what it was. She was reminded of the time that she had been looking for the right kind of wood to use to make her flutes from. Her instincts were too quick, and when she heard a rustle in the trees, the dagger she had been holding left her hand. It turned out to be a friend, and Runi just about died. She was lucky it only left a scar. These cabbage heads reminded her a little of that incident. She just had to tell herself, “It’s okay, these guys really are your enemies. They want you dead. If you don’t slice off their heads, they’ll kill you. And you don’t want to be killed. You have too much to live for.” That eased her tension. And then she could get back to work. Of course Runi had also gotten ahead of herself. She had to do the tasks in order. Archery first!
So Rochir had asked her about mounted archery. Well, she’d tell what she could. “Well, my knowledge is based of what I have read in books. So it is probably very limited. But I shall tell what I can. From what I know, mounted archers in the history of Middle Earth have served as three things, 1. Scouts, first and foremost. 2. If necessary, they are a pre-emptive strike force, and 3. Their main tactic is using an element of surprise.”
“Men were skilled with horses, and this was a skill the Dwarven people lacked. But Men were deemed more vulnerable to their enemies than the Dwarves. This was because the dwarves had armor, and numerous kinds of weapons, and they excelled at making these items. Men had shabby armor if any, and not well armed, all they really had were bows. But because each race had something the other lacked, the Dwarves and Men made an alliance. Since the Men were skilled with mounted archery, they were sent ahead as scouts. They would watch enemy movement. And if it looked as if the enemy were moving into a formation for open attack, the Archers would tear down the enemy as much as they could. Since they were scouts, and not revealed themselves to the enemies, they could use what we would call, an element of surprise. This was probably the driving force behind the success of the archers.”
“In the history of Middle-Earth, we see these three elements in the battle for Helm’s Deep. The horsed archers were sent out as scouts to determine the movements of the enemy. When they returned, they report back that when they saw the enemy gathering, they moved in for attacking. They ended killing a number of orcs, leaving them behind in a ditch. And though they could not get all of them, they certainly got quite a number.”
“Later on, Legolas tells Gimli that the Rohirrim are good archers, but if they only had the Elves of Mirkwood, then this battle would be strongly in their favor. Mainly it was because of pride, methinks, but as well, it would boost the number of mounted archers, and the enemy would be far fewer in number by the time they reached Helm’s Deep.”
“But forgive me, Captain, that is the extent of my knowledge. I hope though that I can indeed learn more about archery under your command. Archery is not my strong point, I am better with the blade, and more practiced. Ballin taught me a little of the bow, and I know a little more about it from my youth. But as I say, my skill lies with the sword.”
She then smiled as she finished, because now, they could move on to her favorite part of this task. The physical part, instead of just plain knowledge. Runi had to DO something. It was fine sharing her knowledge, but if she didn’t get to do something, she would, well, die screaming.
First she had to shoot at the targets with all her arrows. They were at different heights, and different distances. Now this sounded fun. Though certainly a bit more difficult than how she practiced at home, or when Ballin taught her properly. Well actually it was Timlin, Ballin watched. It was essentially the same thing though.
Thankfully, Runi had found her arm guards, as she liked to refer to them, and brought them with her this time. In Basic Training, she hadn’t had them, and well, that was just a huge mistake. When she returned home from basic training she had made sure to find them. Making sure her guards were on properly, she readied herself. Now she wasn’t standing on the ground, so she didn’t have to worry so much about balance and foot position and whatnot. She just needed to make sure that she was steady on LÆdron. “Come LÆdron, lets get in range of those targets.” She then led him a little closer, and then they stopped. She placed her bow in her bow hand, making sure her arm was straight but relaxed, with the elbow facing outward. Runi made sure her hand that held the bow was also relaxed and at a about a 45 degree angle to the bow, which seemed to be a fact that helped, but was little known.
Taking a bow from the quiver slung across her back, she smiled as she let the first arrow go at one of the closer targets. It ended up hitting the first white ring outside the center circle. Unsatisfied with this result, Runi frowned, and reloaded, aimed, and shot again at the same target. This time, it made it on the edge of the red center. Still not satisfied, Runi was getting frustrated. “What’s wrong with me? This can’t too different from shooting an arrow standing up!” This she muttered to herself in quenya.
Deciding to try another target, she moved LÆdron slightly to the right, placing herself in line with the target next to the one she had been shooting at before. Again positioning herself with proper form, she released her arrow. This one made it closer to the center than the last. So Runi decided to try one of the ones further back and that were a bit higher. She then released her arrow, it hitting the white circle outside the bullseye. Frustrated, Runi tried again. This time it did hit closer to the center, though not perfect yet.
Runi kept going until she ran out of arrows. By that time, she had about 4 perfect bullseyes, and many more that were fairly close. She never kept track of how many arrows she really had, so there was no real point in trying to count and figure her percentages. Runi left her arrows in the targets until she was done, just so that she could move on to her favorite of the tasks assigned this time around.
Now, she got to show her proficiency with the sword. She pulled out her precious sword that Ainadel had made her, which glimmered in the sunlight, though not well, since it had a bit of glow about it. It was a faint glow, but dark in nature. It would never completely disappear, but the Elven magic that lay within her sword, she had learned to control. The sword no longer forced its will upon her, but rather the other way round. She smiled as she rode up toward the first cabbage. In her mind though, this was not a cabbage. She couldn’t think that way, or it would end up being chopped up as if she were preparing a cabbage soup. And that was not the way things were done with swords.
Instead, like Rochir suggested, she pretended these were the heads of her enemies. Though, it wasn’t an Easterling she pretended it was. It was actually, well, she would say. But suffice it to say that it was someone that if she saw, would not live to see her mercy. She sliced off the top half of the first cabbage angrily, and then looked at what she had done.
“Now that is not showing my proficiency with the sword! Come on LÆdron. Lets try the next one. And remind me not to get too mad at them.” Though LÆdron was a horse, Runi firmly believed that horse and rider should be one, and if they differed from each other, one of them would have to change. Runi knew in this instance, it would be her that changed. And somehow, she believed firmly that LÆdron would help her do it.
The next cabbage Runi sliced a bit lower. Though still not low enough. Though Runi was getting frustrated, clearly she was having an off day, she couldn’t let those feelings overwhelm her. No siree. This time, she thought of something else. She thought of the day that her twin brother nearly died. She held her sword for a mere moment, sliding her left hand over it. The blade seemed to glow darker, and with that, Runi seemed to gain more will power. Runi then led LÆdron to the next cabbage, and whispered, “Okay LÆdron, now, lets do this.” Like her sword, Runi’s eyes also turned dark. She smiled and then swung at the cabbage with a near perfect stroke. It was really close to the mark where she should hit it. But the next one, it would be a perfect slice.
The next cabbage, Runi sliced perfected at the bottom of the head. She had done it this time. She smiled, and then continued on, her skill beginning to really show. By the end of her task, she had cut off 12 heads perfectly, and 3 not so perfect ones. Runi looked at her work, smiled, and sheathed her sword, which returned to its normal faint glow, and her eyes returned to their normal sapphire blue. She then rode over to the captain, and then said, “Well? What’s next on the agenda?”

I am constantly amazed the amount of information people provide. I am even more amazed that they seem shocked when someone finds out about their bondage secret life or how they use cough syrup.
The best analogy I have ever heard about the internet and privacy is, “do not post anything on the internet that you would not want to be seen on Time Square.” Basically, if you do not want millions of people to see it, then do not post it.
But it isn’t always about what you post, but what you provide.
Below is a running list of suggestions for protecting your privacy.
-Create an Online Identity
Create a username that is anything but unique. Sure you want to be special and recognized, but a unique name is easy to follow. A slip up here and a slip up there and a person can put together a lot of information about you. Most people use the same online handle over and over again. So on one site you registered and put your first name in the profile. You were smart enough to only put the last initial for your last name. So you gave up “Joe”. Several years later and a few times smarter, you register on a professional site and use your real last name in the profile and only a “J” for your first name.
TA DA, you have successfully given up your real first name.
Action points to names to avoid:
- The year you were born
- The city you live in (address, street number etc)
- The year you graduate college or high school
- Anything to do with the school you attend or the work you do
- Any version of your real name (first, middle, last or even nickname)
- Anything referring to your physical attributes
-Use a fake free email account for all internet related postings.
There are a number of free email accounts out there. Go directly to the site. Do not use referral emails and do not provide an alternative email when signing up. This means a few extra steps, but the goal is to not create links between who you are who you are online.
Even though this is a fake email address, do not include it in your profile on any site that posts it publicly. As with usernames, people tend to hold on to email addresses and they are as easy, if not easier, to track then a username.
-Make up where you are from
Fine you just signed up for a dating site. Get creative. Location: Waiting by phone. Once again, it is the little traces that you leave around that add up to real information. Using the example above, Joe S. aka J. Smith is now Joe Smith. Smith is a rather common name. How common is a Joe Smith that lives in Charleston, West Virginia? We also have a username and email address that can further verify.
So you are thinking, “fine. They have my real name and where I live. Who is really going to act on that?”
Depends. If you are a minor, I really do not want to go there. Parents need to really be vigilant about this.
But Joe, you’re an adult now. So what could happen?
Well, Joe… all of this was found via your username. The same name points to a bunch of things that you are interested in. It also provides an email address. Seeing how I am posting this on a gaming forum, lets pose you receive the following email:
“Joe Smith,
My name is Gregory Williams and I am the Test Developer for an online game in development. Due to your past interest in EQ, WoW and LOTRO we would like to invite you to participate in our closed testing.
If you are interested, please sign the non-disclosure agreement and email it back to closedtestingmmorpg@lordsofthe underworld.com.”
Joe cheerfully signs up. He creates a profile on this fake page and odds are, Joe will use the same password he has always used. 1) First way in.
Perhaps Joe is smart enough and creates a unique password. IP is tracked 2) Second way in.
And lastly, Joe is asked to download a program that will allow the company to match his hardware to the version they are testing. 3) Complete open door
A stretch? Perhaps. I guess they could just say they are from Nigeria and claim he won the lottery.
- Strong Passwords and Change them as often as you do your socks
Perhaps that is a bit often, but you need to do it more then you would think. And for the obvious statement… never give out your password to anyone.
- Online Chat with armor on!
If you have to use voice chat servers when online, be overly cautious of the information you say, and those that are you around you. It only takes one slip up by a person in the same room to provide information. “Joe!!! Dinner’s ready.” “Joseph Michael Smith! Turn off that game and come to dinner.”
Sure your guild mates will be rolling laughing, but you better believe that if anyone was recording the experience, you will surely end up being the next LEROY JENKINS!!!
-Stop posting your Instant Messaging Addresses.
Give these out to true friends or co-workers only. It is yet another identifying piece left behind to verify Joe Smith is Joe Smith and now I can chat with him.
If you receive a chat request from someone you are not sure you know, do not accept. Even more so, put them on your ignore. Joe had a pleasant almost flirtatious discussion on a game board with user “16yrblond”. He gets an AIM from 16yrblond immediately after. Awww… cute. Except, 16yrblond is really our fake Gregory Williams making yet another connection with Joe.
- Work sites are just as viewable
More and more companies are recognizing this and going the extra mile to protect their employees. Today’s co-worker is tomorrow’s disgruntled employee. Same rules apply, but now you have to be political about it to your employer.
I realize that much of this seems over the top to some, but it is all realistic. What someone can do with your information is numerous and dangerous. Everything from stealing a game account, to identity theft to actually breaking into your home.
Below are a few computer related and marketing related pieces that I have added. The lines are being blurred everyday and invading someone’s privacy can occur online, via phone or even via the mail.
Watch out for cookies
Cookies are files that websites use to store information about you between sessions. Most of the time they are innocuous. They do things like keep track of your username so that you don’t have to log into a website every time you visit it. However, some of them are used by bad guys to track your browsing habits so that they can target adverts at you or to build a profile of your interests and activities with a view to fraud.
· Set your browser to warn you when a cookie is installed. Note that some sites will not work if you block cookies completely.
· Microsoft Internet Explorer will let you enable and disable cookies on a site by site basis so you can allow them on sites you trust.
· Use an anti-spyware program that scans for so-called tracker cookies (see Stop spyware).
· There are also cookie management programs that can delete old cookies and help manage them. In addition you can use settings in Internet Explorer (see Use Internet Explorer safely) and Mozilla Firefox (see Secure the Firefox web browser) to delete unwanted cookies.
· Use a plain text email display instead of HTML email so that tracking files and cookies can’t be included in email files (see Use Outlook Express safely).
Think about who might be listening.
Unencrypted email and most website interactions can be monitored by your employer, your internet service provider or by any company along the internet path between you and the email or web server you are talking to. Transmission over an insecure Wi-Fi (wireless) network means anyone within radio range can listen in too. In the UK there are strict guidelines about employee monitoring and bugging but, unfortunately, just because it is illegal doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen.
· Use encrypted links for sensitive communications; for example a VPN to connect to the office (see Secure remote access).
· Use an SSL-encrypted web mail account or use encrypted email (see Learn about secure web pages).
· Assume anything that is sent without encryption can be read by third parties.
· Use encryption.
· Spyware or viruses that install keyboard trackers can actually log the keys you press as you type and send them back to the hacker who installed it. These are commonly called ‘keylogger viruses.’ Check your computer regularly for spyware and viruses (see Install anti-virus software and Stop spyware).
· In a public or work environment, if you are concerned about being spied on, check your computer physically for any unusual devices that may be plugged in, especially on the keyboard cable.
· Use secure websites when shopping or banking online.
· Avoid using a work email address for personal use. Have a separate, private email address for private business.
· Be careful about using public computers and public Wi-Fi (wireless) networking hotspots (see Use public computers carefully).
Browse defensively
· Switch off Java, Javascript and ActiveX in your browser and only enable it on a site-by-site basis. See Use Internet Explorer safely.
· Check to see if the website has a real-world presence, such as a helpline number or mailing address.
· Read any ‘privacy’ policy. Many are, in fact, grossly misnamed waivers of all privacy.
· Look for trust signs from organisations like Which that validate minimum standards of privacy and other good practice.
· Remember that a secure link, with a padlock and https, doesn’t say anything about the site’s business practices or attitude to privacy.
