New Outfit and other Ramblings

bf5b6_eq2000679rl2 New Outfit and other RamblingsGoudia managed to gain enough factions and tokens with the Far Seas division to finally purchase some new gear as well as those level 79 recipes that she can’t make yet but will be able to before too long. Have you ever wondered what those recipes (each with five charges) makes? Well, take a peek over at Kasul’s site, he has a post  all about them here. There are some pretty amazing items that crafters can make though the components are going for a fair amount here on Najena. The recipes require 40,000 faction with the Far Seas division which is not impossible to obtain but does take a little time.

Anyhow, Goudia managed to collect her tokens and grind out five writs for faction so it was time for a new set of gear including a new black cloak. I don’t know if the pieces will actually help me craft any better, but here’s hoping.

The little alchemist is also level 70 now, only 10 more to go! Those Far Seas instances were a LOT of help in reaching that level, and I’m looking forward to helping Nostalgia out and doing writs for the last 10 levels. We’re continuing to inch our way to level 40 which is a huge milestone for us.

I didn’t really get any gaming time in yesterday. There are some pretty major real life things going on as anyone who follows me on Twitter knows, so I’ve been slightly preoccupied.

Short term goals? Get the templar upgraded, work on her achievements. I still want to finish decorating the guild hall at one point or another, as well as various other homes I have in the midst of construction. This includes the necromancer one room I have in Big Bend that has been a (slow) work in progress between everything else. I’d still like to revamp Stargrace and Arysh’ homes, they’ve been the same way for over three years now and they could use a face lift. So much decorating to do and only so much time in a day!

I haven’t gotten any further with searching for a raid guild yet, then again I haven’t really looked. We’ll have to see how the real life stuff pans out first before I can dedicate the time that would be required. One of these days I WILL complete enough Moors quests to purchase the faction recipes. Maybe.

Safe travels no matter what game you play.

The Dangers of Buying Plat and/or Power Leveling services(40)

Hello again,

For those that don't know me, my name is Rich Schmelter and I am the customer service manager for the EverQuest product line (EQ, EQII, and EQOA).

Before I get into the main point of this post, I wanted to make it clear that buying plat, items, characters, power leveling, etc, from 3rd party websites is against our policies and we remove any plat, items, exp, or characters from accounts that buy them and take further disciplinary action on accounts that continue to do this or are severe offenders.

Now back to the topic at hand…

I wanted to take a moment to bring to light a concern that myself and our GMs have regarding a growing issue we are seeing occur more and more every day; Compromised Accounts.

"Compromised Accounts? WTH is that?" you say to yourself, head tilting to the side a bit.

Let me explain.  When someone logs into someone else's account and takes all their items, their coin, deletes characters, spams obscenities, loots the guild bank, and performs any other manner of maliciousness, CS refers to that account as a Compromised Account.  Customers often petition us saying, "My account was Hacked, hepl pls!".  In a nutshell, what basically happened is that the account login and password was not kept secure by the account owner or they did not protect their computer properly from malicious access.

As many of you may know, sharing your account information (login/password) is against SOE policies and keeping your account information secure is the responsibility of the owner of the account.  I've been with SOE CS for over 6 years now and I couldn't tell you how many times I've seen a customer's ex-wife/husband/girlfriend/boyfriend, brother/sister, mother/father/grandparent, roommate/guildmate, child/dog/cat (yes, people have claimed their pets deleted stuff on their account ‘accidentally'), log into an account and have a field day of revenge for some unknown wrong that was done to them.  That in and of itself, should be warning enough to keep your login info to yourself and not to write it down where others can find it or post it on your super-secret guild website that only a few friends have access too.

"So how does this relate to Buying Plat and Power Leveling services?" you ask.

Very simple, and here is the crux of the concern we want to bring to the attention of our customers:  The plat selling and power leveling websites are now actively compromising accounts, stripping them of everything (and stripping guild banks too), and using the plat they gain from this malicious access to sell to players.  We've been seeing more and more instances of this over the last several weeks.

We even had a case recently where an account purchased plat from a website plat seller, the account was later accessed and stripped of all items by that very same plat seller, and on the next day was sold back the same plat that was taken from their account.

How does CS know this?  When we investigate these issues, we can track where the money goes.  Sure the plat sellers use different techniques to try to mask what is actually happening, but our logs record what they do and with some time we can see exactly what happened and take action from there.

The plat sellers and power leveling services are likely obtaining account information in a number of possible ways, be that in a clandestine manner such as virus's, worms, and keystroke loggers imbedded in their websites, or as obvious as saving your account info for later exploitation when you give it to them for power leveling your character.

I'm sure you are thinking, "What is CS doing about the plat seller/spammer issue?"
This is a bigger topic and can best be addressed in a different forum post or blog entry, but in short, CS is constantly working with our Dev, QA, and Platform teams to come up with new ways to track, remove, prevent spammers, plat sellers, etc from doing the disruptive things they do.  As the bad guys adjust their tactics to try and avoid detection, CS responds in turn and counters their activities.  Heck, we even have a team of GMs specifically dedicated to investigating and removing plat selling/spamming/hacking/illegal farming accounts from the game.

As for this specific issue, when CS receives a petition from someone that has had their account compromised and is missing all their hard earned coin, items, etc, we do our very best to assist with restoring characters and guild banks back to the way they were before they were accessed maliciously and then we go after the culprit.  These investigations can take a significant amount time to do and we cannot guarantee that we can return you back to the exact point you were before this happened.  These types of issues also take time away from answering customer petitions for other important issues involving bugged quests, items, etc.

The bottom line is this; the plat sellers and power leveling services, while never trustworthy to begin with, are now actively double crossing the very people that trusted them and have taken this problem to another level.  This also means that if you have shared your account information with anyone at any time in the past, you have put your account at risk for losing the rewards of your long hours of game play.   In my experience with seeing Compromised Account issues time and time again, no one you share your account information with will treat it with the respect it deserves and this situation almost always ends with a petition for help.

If you have ever shared your account information with anyone in the past or have ever bought plat or used a power leveling service, I strongly suggest you do the following:
- Change your account password immediately and change it often.
- Update your security question.
     - You can do both of these by going to www.station.sony.com
          - Mouse over the My Account link at the top
          - Click on Update Account Information
          - Log in
          - Click on the Change Password button on the right
          - The Secret Question/Answer options are at the bottom of the page
- Never share your account information with anyone again.
- Use anti-virus software, run regular virus scans, and keep your anti-virus definitions up to date.
- Never, ever, visit a plat selling / power leveling service website.

These suggestions will help you keep your account information secure and will go a long way towards preventing your account from being compromised.  Also, not buying plat or power leveling will help reduce the problem as a whole, as without a demand, they will not be able to operate.

While it is our current policy to assist with these issues and to restore characters and guild banks to the best of our ability, please remember that we may not be able to assist with repeated occurrences of compromised accounts and that we cannot guarantee that we can restore you back to exactly where you were when your account was compromised.

Thanks for reading and I hope that I was able to answer some questions and help prevent this issue from growing further.

Will RMT make SOE’s Station Access a relic of the past?

January 5, 2009 by admin · Comment

Last year, Massively’s Michael Zenke interviewed SOE’s John Smedley about, among other things, the future of SOE’s all-inclusive Station Access plan:

John Smedley: Sure. I don’t mind this being public. We are having ongoing discussions inside the company about making station access an all-inclusive pass. Everything that we have, you get as a customer. Station Access subscribers would get every expansion pack for every game, as well as future expansions for every game as well. For the same price now, without raising the price. We have two problems, though. One: we have third parties involved in this. LucasArts, for example, will have to buy off on this, as would others. Second is the less obvious one: Promising future stuff is the meat of the problem. We haven’t found the right way to word things yet. To be honest other priorities have gotten in the way. That’s what we want to offer people.

In the past year, Flying Lab’s “Pirates of the Burning Sea” was added to Station Access, but none of the things mentioned were ever mentioned after this. We EQ and EQ2 players STILL have to sign up for the Station Players Advanced Character plan — at a buck per month per feature — to see detailed information about our own characters.

With RMT for sure being a big part of upcoming MMOs The Agency and Free Realms, and given that both those and DC Universe Online will also be released on the PS3, where monthly subscription plans are unknown, it really looks like the business model for SOE’s MMOs is moving away from the monthly subscription plan.

If having the Station Access won’t give you any sort of benefit to the newer MMOs, what is the reason to keep it, aside from currently actively playing three or more SOE subscription-based games?

Assuring Station Access subscribers that their monthly investment in SOE games will be valuable going forward should be a top priority. Otherwise, players in these cash-strapped times will be looking at their expenses, and wondering if they really are getting $30 worth of gaming from their subscription.

Obelisk of A and the Sunken Theater

ea982_eq2000680ww7 Obelisk of A and the Sunken TheaterWhat’s that in the sky? It’s a bird! It’s a plane! Wait.. No.. it’s a barrel? ACK it’s a halfling falling from the sky! That’s right, last night was one of those rare completely awesome days in EQ2 that I love to have. Busy, and fun. It started by me completing the epic weapon on my templar thanks to Shadowgeist, a few other people from siege, and a lot of pick up folks. I had to kill some whipcrackers and a slave master in Sebilis, head back out and talk to someone in Kunzar Jungle, go back in and find a book just laying on the floor, then go some place else within the zone and take down a named. Head back out (of course) to Kunzar Jungle where I was given my new shiny hammer. It’s huge. In fact when I’m in halfling form, it’s bigger then me.

Once that was done it was time for a quick bite to eat, and then the daily double which was the Obelisk in Moors. Tap Tap, I poked Tipa on Xfire to see if she wanted to come too, I was pretty sure she’d never been there before.

The zone went fast, it’s always been fairly quick. We did wipe once because the revolving balls were not being stepped on, but aside from that it was great. The ‘coin’ chest within the zone dropped 12 plat for us, and you can’t complain about that. I don’t think anything of any note dropped, certainly not the shield I’d really like to get. I was still happy though, it was fun. A short break ensued while a few group members headed off to raids which ended up being cancelled early, so we decided to head to Veksar - The Sunken Theater (I believe that’s the name of it, I may be mistaken). It’s the Veksar 2.0 and I’d never been there before.

The group consisted of a shadowknight, dirge, conjuror, illusionist, ranger, and myself as templar. I was assured that I could solo heal this without too much problem, and I typically feel a little cautious towards that. Time compression eases a lot of those fears though. Ah how I love TC.

Anyhow, we were doing pretty well. I died once or twice because of resisted taunts, and reactives pinging off. No big deal. However, we got to Lord someone-or-other and then the tank went link dead - graphic card fried.

Ack.

So I relogged over to the laptop to do the instance from there, while my computer was donated to the cause. Back in game and on with the fights. The entire zone looks like the very first version of Veksar with a few named tossed in, and you can in fact complete Veksar 1.0 quests in the 2.0 zone, go figure.

The final named is of course the dragon, and you have to defeat him three times. Like all typical EQ2 dragons he has a tail swipe, a frontal, and mean aoe’s that go off during the fight. We opened with bladedance, flanked him (except for the main tank) and after wiping once due to everyone eating the tail swipe it went MUCH smoother. Not only was the fight smooth, it dropped a VERY nice healer charm item for me. It has 155 power, +75 to heals, +2 heal crit, and 25 wis / 25 stam. Very nice item to add to my collection. Aside from that, nothing of note really dropped. I did manage to hit 130aa on the templar - I realize I am a HUGE slacker on the questing for her, but soloing with the templar is painfully slow even with a partial dps spec.

I’m really glad to be gearing her up over time, it’s been fairly painless. Her power is still a bit low for my liking, but she has only a few adornments. At 924 wisdom her resists are above where I need them to be and she’s got 10,000 hit points, 8,000 power (yes, that’s buffed). I’m still sporting a few pieces of the level 68 legendary gear from EoF (I was using it for the 33% casting speed increase) but hopefully I’ll be able to save up enough shards to get rid of that set all together. I’ve got a total of 4 shards to my collection thus far, I need.. well.. a lot.

All in all, a fantastic day. I hope everyone else had just as much fun on their weekends.

EQ2: You’ve Got Mail!

I don’t know why I missed this HUGE sculpture in the gnomish bit of the Moors of Ykesha before. So like, NOW you know where the mailbox is… from ORBIT.

I wish they did the same thing for the location of the druid ring. People kept trying to lead me to it. “It’s right next to the landing pad!” “From the cannon?” “No, just where you get off the boat!” I run around for about ten minutes. “Is it the wizard spires?” “No, but it’s near them.” “Yay! Okay!” Five minutes later. “Okay, this druid ring. Does it look like other druid rings, or is it like a pipe in the ground or something?” “No, it looks EXACTLY like all the other druid rings! It’s right next to where you get off the boat! Just go down a little and THERE IT IS!”

More running around. I load up the EQ2 Wiki. It has the locs of all the druid rings — EXCEPT this one! It’s a friggin’ CONSPIRACY!

So I start taking the “down” bit to heart, and start circling the landing pad. Cliff. Cliff. Cliff. Certain death. Cliff. Monster. Cliff. Oh look, here comes a ledge. Complete with druid ring.

Duh. I can’t imagine I could have possibly sounder thicker over guild chat.

370af_everquest2-2009-01-04-20-01-16-17 EQ2: You’ve Got Mail!

I didn’t spend all night sounding like a trickster god had struck me blind and the only cure was at the druid ring. I had just gotten back from driving my son back to school in Rhode Island, and was poking around the City of Heroes holiday stuff while totally forgetting about the rice I had steaming in the cooker. “Why am I hungry?” I thought, as I sent my ninja army chasing down another group of angry snowmen in Cap du Diablo. “Didn’t I cook some rice?”

Cook, yes. Eat, no.

I got a tell on XFire inviting me along on tonight’s Daily Double, and nothing was going to stop me! I’d never been to this zone before. It went so fast that I’m not sure I’ve been there yet :P This was the bouncy one where someone bounces and catches balls of magical energy. I ran out of arrows halfway through that fight — those nights in Veeshan’s Peak go through arrows like anything, and I’d forgotten to restock.

The moment I got into game, the same guild that I’ve been raiding VP with asked me along again to clear further in. I declined, I had more important business, but it was nice to see I had a raid slot. Mythical is so close!

So that was fun. Afterward, I logged to do some housework and ended up watching movies on the PS3 as I copied some shows there from my computer. Next time someone visits, they will be ambushed by Blackpool :) It would be really nice if the PS3 preserved my folders, though. I did some virtual house cleaning as well. I cleaned up the mess in the Nostalgia guild hall basement. I’m a failure at decorating. I know what I want to do but I don’t know how to do it and it just comes out all wrong. I’ll try to figure out something in the privacy of my own apartment.

I was playing City of Heroes because I am about to cancel my account. Money is incredibly tight these days and I have to cut corners where I can. But I thought I would get a couple more play sessions in before I canceled and deleted all the files except the patcher. I’ll probably cancel EverQuest as well, and drop the Station Pass for my main account, leaving me with only EQ2. It seems SOE is bringing out their new MMOs under a non-subscription model, so the Station Pass will become less and less valuable. If The Agency and Free Realms and DC Universe Online move toward RMT business models, what good is Station Pass? It’s double dipping, and I’m not a fan of that.

I also organized those blog posts I’ve done comics for, as well as the old Crimson Eternity comics, and made them easier to get to, should you want to see them all for some reason. I was kinda surprised to see I’d been doing the CE comics, some of them, since I’d been blogging. I thought I finished doing those before the blog, but it turns out it wasn’t as long ago as I remember that I was raiding in CE. It seems like ages. Anyway, the “My Comics” link in the sidebar will have them all.

EQ2: The gladdest/saddest sight in Veeshan’s Peak

I’d worked so long on the Spellborn comic — way longer than I thought, it took forever to come up with the story and then I had to go back and make tedious reshoots to fill in the plot and a long time in Photoshop to make it look like Mercy and Erisa were in the same place at the same time — that I thought I would reward myself with some EverQuest II time. I don’t play enough of my favorite game :) and anyway, if Stargrace needed some help with her Templar epic, she says she won’t ask for help even if I have set Xfire to explicitly invite people to bug me, so I’d be on line anyway.

She was busy doing something; I grabbed the TSO Daily Double quest and went looking for group, but the same folks who brought me to Veeshan’s Peak a couple of weeks ago asked if I’d like to come along again.

Duh! I’d LOVE to!

0b98d_everquest2-2009-01-03-23-15-52-82 EQ2: The gladdest/saddest sight in Veeshan’s Peak

Back on the menu were the Elder guy and Druushk. Last time, there were plenty of mages. This time, plenty of scouts, so we had to fiddle with the strategy a little bit, but he died, and I got a nice upgrade to my Shard of Hate sword out of it. I love the looks of the sword, but the only stat it has is a + to STR, a stat I have already capped. The new short spear has +INT and +WIS, so more damage and more resists… good stuff. It looks kinda like a unicorn horn. Or a knitting needle… if you make your knitting needles from unicorn horns. I’m just going to have to go with that last, because I am, after all, a tailor. A knitting needle made from a unicorn’s horn would be just the sort of thing an evil seamstress like myself might have. To get all stabby with.

After, we fought our way up to Druushk. He’s the gatekeeper and blocks further progress into the dungeon, and is also the final raid mob for many classes mythical epics — including mine.

Each time we pulled Druushk he’d get a little closer to dying. 15%. *1%*! That one was stupid. D. was just about to die, and we were all gratsing ourselves, when one person died, which boosted D.’s health. And then another. And then it was a wipe.

1%! And no Inquisitor in the raid! I bet if I wanted to go Inq again, I’d be raiding whenever i liked. Though her gear is cruddy. And she hasn’t even got her fabled epic (hasn’t even started on it).

Next pull, D. died. VERY happy. She dropped lots of loot, and people were excitedly getting their epic updates.

I ran into the back room for mine — and there it was! The mystical harp! If I looted that, I could hand it to that Ice Maiden I last met a year ago and walk away with a very glowy axe! Maybe the game would recognize that I’d killed the Leviathan a couple of times, but before they added the epics!

But… though I could see the harp, I couldn’t touch it or carry it away.

I’d killed Druushk, but my epic was as far away as ever.

Well, not really. If I can finagle my way into a Leviathan raid, I now know I can be raiding with people who can *kill Druushk!*.

The unicorn horn knitting needle, btw, may plainly be seen at my side. It doesn’t really look like much.

The raid force meets again Tuesday to take on Nexona. And they do raid Leviathan. So, goal for me: Keep on being available for raids and work toward my Mythical. It’s not something I really need, I’m not a raider, but it’s something I would enjoy having just for the having.

c800c_eq2000672bh6 Epic Progression

This is the 6th epic for one of my characters I’m working on, since I own both the troubador and dirge epics (in lue of me betraying again). So far the templar one has not been too bad. The easiest epic I’ve done has been the coercer one. The most difficult was probably the troubador. Or the longest in any case. The templar requires a lot of running around, looking for components to save people of course. I dislike how some epics make you pay a hefty sum of coin to an npc (it was 4p for the templar one) while others do not (the coercer paid nothing). Some of them reward house items (the templar gets a book, the troubador got a musical instrument that has a graphic effect) and others get nothing (the dirge got nothing, nor did the coercer).

After running around talking to people, and gathering flowers, I needed to kill the mucus in Chelsith. This is where I ran into problems. Kasul and Shadowgeist were around so technically we had a group, but aside from those two not a single person offered to help when it was put out on both channels and in some alt guild channels.

Well. I really wanted the update, so we decided we would trio Chelsith. We avoided the Leviathan named, but killed the mucus (after one wipe due to some adds) and killed each one of the Yah’li named which I’d never killed before since Petites had never been to the zone before.

After that we managed to string a group of 5 people together to head to Unrest for one of Kasul’s epic kills. As you can tell by the screen shot above, Petites is looking so utterly cute, how could anyone kill her?! We almost wiped on that mob, I swear *grins*

We headed to Lesser Faydark for another of Kasul’s epic updates, and I would have headed to the third kill he needed, but apparently it’s two 85’s and I was unsure of whether we could trio that or not, Kasul had to get some sleep for work the next day. I headed off to Jarsath Waste to harvest some smoldering material (next portion of my own epic) and talk to a bunch more NPC, saving someone in Greater Faydark. Now I need to obtain 35 hides from drake which are an ‘uncommon’ drop, and I’ll need to kill approximately 130 or so of the creatures. Reminds me of doing my cleric epic in EQ1 and going after pearls or whatever those were (I forget the exact names). Good times.

I stopped there for the night, figuring there’s no way I’m going to solo those creatures. I’ll wait until I get a few people to help me out so it goes by faster.

I did get a new neck piece upgrade from Chelsith which was great, I was still wearing my Mark of the Awakened. The templar is slowly getting on par in gear, and I’m really happy about that. Love playing the class, and once I get a few more pieces of TSO gear that reduce my casting times I’ll be set. Hopefully this weekend I’ll make some heavy progress on my epic, and perhaps even finish it. We’ll see!
